mwbamwbqStyxosaurus (il cui nome significa "sauro del mwbgfiume Stige") è un mwbwgenere estinto di mwcaplesiosauro appartenente alla mwcqfamiglia mwcgElasmosauridae, vissuto nel mwcwCretaceo superiore, circa 83.5–80.5 milioni di anni fa (mwdaCampaniano), in quella che un tempo era il mwdqMare Interno Occidentale, in mwdgNord America. Il genere contiene due mwdwspecie: la mweaspecie tipo mweqS. snowii e mwegS. browni.

Scoperta
L'mwfwesemplare olotipo di mwgaStyxosaurus snowii venne descritto da Samuel Wendell Willistoncite-ref-williston-1890-structure-1-0[1]cite-ref-williston-1890-new-2-0[2] sulla base di un cranio completo e 20 vertebre che formano l'olotipo dell'animale.cite-ref-williston-1890-new-2-1[2]
Un esemplare più completo, SDSMT 451, è stato scoperto vicino a Iona, mwjgDakota del Sud, sempre negli mwjwStati Uniti, nel 1945. L'esemplare venne originariamente descritto e nominato come mwkaAlzadasaurus pembertoni da Welles e Bump (1949) e tale è rimasto fino a quando non è stato sinonimizzato in mwkqS. snowii da Carpenter.cite-ref-carpenter1999-3-0[3] Nella cavità toracica dell'animale sono stati rinvenuti circa 250 mwlggastroliti, o "pietre dello stomaco". Un calco dell'esemplare è stato montato alla School of Mines, sebbene sia stato montato con la testa sollevata ed il collo ad S come se stesse scrutando fuori dall'acqua, anche se tale posizione sarebbe fisicamente impossibile per l'animale in vita.cite-ref-4[4]
mwnaStyxosaurus prende il nome dal mitologico mwnqfiume Stige (Στυξ), che separava l'mwngoltretomba greco dal mondo dei vivi. Il suffisso -saurus deriva dal greco mwnwsauros/σαυρος, significa invece "lucertola" o "rettile".
L'esemplare tipo venne ritrovato ad Hell Creek nella mwoqContea di Logan, mwogKansas, ed è la fonte del nome del genere coniato da Samuel Paul Welles, che descrisse il genere nel 1943.cite-ref-welles-s-p-1943-5-0[5]
Descrizione
mwqqStyxosaurus era un grande mwqgelasmosauride, plesiosauri di grandi dimensioni dotati di un collo particolarmente lungo. Il collo era composto da oltre sessanta vertebre cervicali e da solo poteva raggiungere circa 5,25 metri di lunghezza.cite-ref-carpenter1999-3-1[3]cite-ref-gorman2016-6-0[6] La lunghezza totale dell'animale si aggirava intorno ai 10,5 metri, per un peso di 2,3 tonnellate.cite-ref-7[7] Il mwtwcranio era piccolo e piatto, dotato di mwuadenti affilati e conici, più adatti all'impalare e trattenere le prede piuttosto che lacerarle; per questo, come per altri mwuqplesiosauri, si pensa che mwugStyxosaurus mwuwingoiasse le sue prede intere.cite-ref-natgeo-8-0[8]
Classificazione
mwzqStyxosaurus snowii appartiene a un mwzgclade chiamato mwzwElasmosauridae ed è strettamente imparentato con mwaamwaqElasmosaurus platyurus, anch'esso ritrovato in mwagKansas, mwawUSA, nel 1867.cite-ref-9[9]
Il primo esemplare di mwcqStyxosaurus ad essere descritto fu inizialmente nominato mwcgCimoliasaurus snowii da Samuel Wendell Williston, nel 1890.cite-ref-williston-1890-structure-1-1[1] L'esemplare includeva un mwdwcranio completo e più di 20 mweavertebre cervicali (KUVP 1301) ritrovate vicino a Hell Creek, nel Kansas occidentale dal giudice EP West.cite-ref-williston-1890-structure-1-2[1]
Una seconda specie, mwiqStyxosaurus browni, venne nominata da Welles, nel 1952. Anche se sinonimizzata in mwigmwiwHydralmosaurus serpentinus da Kenneth Carpenter nel 1999, la specie è stata riconvalidata da Rodrigo A. Otero nel 2016.cite-ref-carpenter1999-3-2[3]cite-ref-11[11]
Il seguente mwlqcladogramma mostra il posizionamento di mwlgStyxosaurus all'interno di Elasmosauridae a seguito di un'analisi di Otero (2016):cite-ref-12[12]
Paleobiologia
Sebbene la maggior parte dei mwpgpredatori non utilizzi gastroliti per macinare il cibo, quasi tutti gli esemplari di elasmosauro ragionevolmente completi includono mwpwgastroliti nella loro cavità toracica. Sebbene sia possibile che mwqaStyxosaurus usasse queste pietre come mwqqzavorra, un esemplare di mwqgStyxosaurus ritrovato nel Pierre Shale del Kansas occidentale includeva lische di pesce macinate mescolate insieme a gastroliti.cite-ref-13[13] Inoltre, il peso dei gastroliti trovati in esemplari di elasmosauri è sempre molto inferiore all'1% del peso stimato dell'animale vivente.cite-ref-14[14]
Mentre i mwtacoccodrilli e alcuni altri animali odierni usano i gastroliti come zavorra, sembra probabile che gli elasmosauri li usassero anche come mulino gastrico, utilizzando le pietre ingerite ed i movimenti dell'apparato digerente per sminuzzare il cibo ingoiato intero dall'animale.cite-ref-15[15]
Come la maggior parte degli altri plesiosauri, mwugStyxosaurus, probabilmente, si nutriva di mwuwbelemniti, mwvapesci (mwvqGillicus, ecc.) e mwvwcalamari. Con i suoi sottili denti conici intrecciati, mwwaStyxosaurus era un predatore lento che utilizzava il lungo collo per avvicinarsi alle sue prede, per poi arpionarle con i lunghi denti conici prima di ingoiarla intera.
